Südkirche (South Church)

The South Church in the Pliensauvorstadt suburb on the other side of the Neckar is one of the most remarkable buildings of the 20th century. Martin Elsaesser created this building in 1925/26 in the style of the Expressionism. The architecture as well as the furnishings of the brick building speak an expressive, partly monumental, language of form. With the division of the interior into a sermon and celebration church, plus the inclusion of community rooms, Elsaesser took up a new idea of community life.
